Only a rangehood with a remote fan motor can truly be called silent as a fan within the the rangehood body must necessarily be heard. For a silent rangehood, having a remote fan or motor for your rangehood or downdraft ensures that most of the noise is eliminated from its operating area. It won't be totally silent of course because some noise will be generated by the air moving through the filters but the motor noise will be confined to some remote location such as the loft.
